  Program

Good Shepherd Gracenter is a tax-exempt nonprofit organization whose program, Women’s Secondary Recovery Program, provides housing for women in recovery coming out of treatment programs who want to live in a drug/alcohol free environment to support their sobriety.  It serves women between the ages of 18 to 35 with a commitment to succeed, regardless of their ability to pay for the costs of the program. Participant fees are on a sliding scale, based on the participant’s income. Gracenter holds a State license as a Residential Alcoholism/Drug Abuse Recovery Facility.

This unique women's program offers a 12-Step approach, which Gracenter believes promotes long-term recovery. The large, home-like residence is located in San Francisco near public transportation and accommodates 10 women, each having her own private bedroom.

Services include case management to assist the participants develop their individual sobriety plan and to connect them with appropriate community resources.  The participants attend multiple 12-Step meetings including one held at Gracenter, a weekly house meeting, monthly workshops, and work actively with a sponsor.  A live-in house manager is available to the participants in the evenings for assistance as needed.  Food for all meals is provided for the participants, and four evening meals are prepared by staff.

Participants make a six-month commitment and may stay up to twenty-four months to complete their goals. During their stay, participants work, go to school, or do volunteer work. They pay an Admission Fee when entering the program and a Monthly Fee on a sliding scale and an ongoing basis.

To be considered for participation in the program, women must:

  • Have completed a recovery program or been clean and sober for at least 30 days.

  • Be committed to making a lifestyle change to develop skills that promote sobriety, employment or other income generating activities, and emotional well-being.

  • Be willing to commit to a formal agreement, program policies, and house rules that clearly state responsibilities and goals.

  • Be willing to join a community of women in residence to support each other in maintaining sobriety and other common goals.
